Steel building vs. sheet-metal building – differences worth knowing

When looking for the best solutions for their company, investors often use the terms “steel building” and “sheet-metal building” interchangeably. In common understanding, a “tin shed” is usually associated with a low price and fast delivery. However, from an engineering and professional construction point of view, these terms refer to completely different aspects of the building. Understanding this difference is key to making an informed decision that will affect the durability, safety and functionality of the building
sheet-metal building

In this article we explain why a professional “sheet-metal building” is above all a solid steel structure, and when to choose which cladding option.

Structure vs. cladding: what are you really building?

The key to clearing up any doubts lies in distinguishing the building's frame from its outer skin.

  • Steel building – this term refers directly to the structural material, from which the building's frame (load-bearing structure) is made. It is a system of columns, rafters and trusses that transfers all loads (wind, snow or self-weight) to the foundations.
  • Sheet-metal building – this term actually refers to the cladding method of the building. It means that a professional steel structure is clad with trapezoidal sheet.

At MatBud we don't build flimsy sheds. Every project is based on a professional steel frame, which can be finished in two ways:

  1. Steel buildings clad with trapezoidal sheet – so-called “cold” buildings, ideal for storing goods that are not temperature-sensitive.
  2. Steel buildings clad with sandwich panels – “warm” buildings, providing the thermal insulation essential for production processes or food storage.

Why is a professional “tin shed” a better investment?

Many people typing “tin shed price” into a search engine are looking for the cheapest solutions on the market. However, it is worth remembering that a professional MatBud steel building clad with trapezoidal sheet is very different from typical lightweight garage sheds.

Safety and structural calculations

Each of our structures, regardless of the cladding type, comes with full structural and strength calculations. This means that the designer has calculated exactly how the building will behave in strong winds or under heavy snow. For industrial buildings, the standards (e.g. Eurocode 7) require that settlement does not exceed permissible limits, which ensures stability and safety in use.

Durability for decades: hot-dip galvanising

Unlike cheap tin sheds, which often corrode after just a few seasons, MatBud structures are, as standard, hot-dip galvanised. It is the most effective method of protecting steel, ensuring the building's frame remains intact for many years and eliminating maintenance costs.

Foundations: a base that must not be skipped

Investors often wrongly assume that a “lightweight” sheet-metal building does not need solid foundations. In fact, it is the foundations that ensure the building's stability under wind or dynamic loads.

The choice of foundation depends on the soil parameters, which determine the mandatory geotechnical survey. The most common methods are:

  • Pad foundations: the most economical solution for the columns of a framed building.
  • Strip foundations: used along the line of walls, e.g. under retaining walls.
  • Raft foundation: ideal on ground with low bearing capacity, ensuring an even distribution of the weight of the whole building.

A properly constructed foundation, positioned below the frost depth of the ground (in Poland, from 0.8 m to 1.4 m), protects the building from frost heave deformations.

Built as fast as a “tin shed”, with the quality of an industrial building

One of the reasons customers look for tin sheds is time. At MatBud we combine fast delivery with the highest engineering quality thanks to a strategy of parallel workstreams. We offer more than made-to-order modular steel buildings. We keep in stock at all times 500 tonnes of ready-made steel structures available from stock. This drastically shortens the investment process.

Which cladding should you choose?

If economy is your priority and you don't need thermal insulation, a steel building clad with trapezoidal sheet will be spot on. However, if you plan to heat the building, go for sandwich panels.

Whatever cladding you choose, the foundation of your business should be a solid, galvanised steel structure with full design documentation. Only such a solution guarantees that the building will be a safe and durable asset for your enterprise.

Not sure which building dimensions will be most cost-effective? Use our configurator. In a few minutes you can choose the optimal width and cladding type and get a preliminary quote, which will be the perfect starting point for discussing foundations and erection.

FAQ

What is the difference between a steel building and a sheet-metal building?

“Steel building” refers primarily to the load-bearing structure of the building, made of steel columns, rafters and trusses. “Sheet-metal building”, on the other hand, describes how the building is finished – in this case, a professional steel frame is clad with trapezoidal sheet.

Trapezoidal sheet works best in buildings that do not require thermal insulation, e.g. warehouses for materials unaffected by temperature changes. It is an economical way to create a durable and functional industrial building.

The choice depends on the building's purpose. Trapezoidal sheet is suitable for unheated buildings, while sandwich panels provide thermal insulation and work better in production buildings, heated warehouses or buildings for storing products that require a stable temperature.

Yes. Even a relatively light steel building must have proper foundations to remain stable under wind, snow and other loads. The type of foundation is chosen based on, among other things, the structural parameters and the results of a geotechnical survey.
