What is an agricultural canopy and when does it work best?
An agricultural canopy is a roofed structure, usually partly open at the sides, so machinery can drive in and out without opening doors. It works well where quick access to equipment and good ventilation matter, e.g. for storing straw bales. Most often it serves as a garage for a tractor and trailers or as a store for fuel and fertilisers. If construction needs to start quickly, e.g. before the harvest season, it is worth choosing ready-made modular components – we wrote about this in the article on building agricultural buildings.
The steel structure of a canopy – what it consists of
A modern farm canopy is based on a steel structure made of hot-dip galvanised steel, which does not rot and does not require annual maintenance like timber structures. The frame consists of load-bearing columns set in pad foundations, roof girders carrying snow and wind loads, and purlins to which the roof covering is fixed. The whole is held together by bracing – diagonal members that stiffen it against racking in strong winds. The way the columns are set depends on the ground, which is why a well-designed foundation for a steel building or canopy is the basis of the structure's durability.
The canopy frame – load-bearing members and their role
The canopy frame is designed for the span, snow load and purpose of the building. The larger the machine that has to fit under the roof, the greater the column spacing and the heavier the girder section. At MatBud every component arrives on site already cut to size and protected against corrosion in the factory, so erection comes down to bolting together ready-made components – which can shorten the project by several weeks.
Mono-pitch or duo-pitch agricultural canopy
A mono-pitch agricultural canopy has a single roof sloping to one side, which works well when attached to an existing barn and where a lower wall is preferred on the neighbour's side. The duo-pitch version gives more space under the ridge and drains water better, which is why it is more often chosen as a free-standing structure.
Farm machinery canopy – how to choose the dimensions
A well-designed farm machinery canopy should have at least half a metre of clearance above the tallest machine – this is important for combine harvesters with a raised header. Width should be calculated with room for manoeuvring and servicing, not just “to the inch”. If you plan to expand your machinery fleet, it is better to choose a modular structure from the start, which can be extended with further bays without demolishing the building.
The cost of building a steel canopy – what affects the price?
The cost of building a steel canopy depends mainly on the floor area, ridge height and type of roof covering, and on whether the side walls are clad or the structure remains open. The structure itself usually accounts for a smaller part of the budget than you might think – a ready-made 10 by 20 metre structure with a height of 4 metres costs around PLN 43,200 net in our range (as of August 2026), while the rest of the budget goes on foundations and roof covering. If you are considering a full building with clad walls, we have collected price ranges in the article on the cost of building a steel building.
Steel agricultural canopies vs. timber canopies
Steel agricultural canopies outperform timber structures above all in durability – galvanised steel lasts several decades without replacing components, while timber needs regular impregnation and rots in contact with damp hay. Steel is also non-combustible and allows larger spans without additional columns, so the interior can be used in full. A well-designed steel agricultural canopy serves for decades with almost no maintenance.
FAQ
Does building an agricultural canopy require a building permit?
It depends on the floor area and the location of the plot – small farm canopies often only need to be notified. We have described the details in the article on notification and building permits for steel canopies.
How long does it take to build a steel canopy?
With modular structures, erection usually takes from a few days to two weeks, depending on the size of the building.
Can a steel canopy be extended?
Yes, if it is designed as a modular structure – additional bays are fitted to the existing frame.
