Steel building as a high-bay warehouse – what must the investor keep in mind?

A high-bay warehouse is a solution that makes maximum use of the building's volume while keeping logistics processes efficient. However, the technical requirements for such buildings are much higher than for standard warehouse buildings, which makes the design and contractor selection stage critically important.

The constantly growing e-commerce market and the increasing demands of the transport, shipping and logistics (TSL) sector mean that optimising warehouse space has become one of the key challenges for today's businesses.

Key parameters: warehouse height and cubic capacity

The most important feature of a high-bay warehouse is its clear height. As an experienced manufacturer and general contractor, MatBud offers duo-pitch structures up to 12 metres high. Such a height allows multi-level racking systems to be installed, which in practice means multiplying the number of pallet locations on the same footprint.

When planning such a tall building, the stability of the structure must be kept in mind. MatBud bases its projects on hot-rolled IPE I-beams, which are characterised by high load-bearing capacity and strength. It is worth mentioning that when building such advanced facilities, protecting them is a priority – our structures are hot-dip galvanised, which ensures long-term corrosion resistance, backed by a 10-year warranty on the zinc coating. Such durability is essential in logistics warehouses, which are intensively used for years.

A solid base: the floor slab in a steel building

In warehouses where racking reaches 10 or 12 metres, there is practically no margin for error in floor flatness. Even a millimetre deviation at floor level can result in a deflection of several centimetres at the top of the racking, which threatens operational safety and hinders the work of VNA (Very Narrow Aisle) forklift trucks. That is why the floor slab in a steel warehouse building must be made with the utmost precision.

Working as general contractor, MatBud takes responsibility for preparing the foundations for a steel building and a floor slab that will withstand huge point loads from racking base plates and dynamic loads from handling equipment. A properly designed and constructed floor not only ensures safety but also reduces wear on the forklift fleet.

Column spacing and storage technology

Investors planning warehouse buildings must also decide on the span of the structure. MatBud duo-pitch systems allow widths from 8.6 m to 22 m without additional internal columns. The absence of intermediate supports is a huge advantage in logistics – it allows any configuration of racking rows and aisles. Examples of such large, functional buildings can be found among our projects, e.g. in Skarżysko (3696 m²) or Lublin (over 2250 m²), where space optimisation was the investor's key requirement.

When planning an investment, it is also worth thinking about the future. Our buildings are designed using modular technology, which makes them easy to extend with further frames if demand for storage space grows. If the warehouse is to handle temperature-sensitive goods, suitable cladding will be essential – you can read more about this in the article on insulating and heating steel buildings.

FAQ

How high are the steel buildings offered by MatBud?

As standard, we build buildings up to 12 m high, which is optimal for most high-bay storage systems.

Yes, as general contractor we handle the complete project, from foundations to finishing.

Duo-pitch buildings can be up to 22 m wide and 120 m long.

It depends on the type of goods stored. We offer both trapezoidal sheet cladding and insulated sandwich panels.
